The Philadelphia Live Arts Festival and Philly Fringe is an internationally recognized presenter of performing arts. They support the work of a broad array of performing artists from Philadelphia and around the world by producing two concurrent sixteen-day festivals each September in venues throughout Philadelphia. The 14th annual Philadelphia Live Arts Festival and Philly Fringe will take place from September 3 -18, 2010.

Philadelphia Live Arts Festival

A collection of the world’s best contemporary performing artists energize Philadelphia audiences each year during the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival. Selected by Nick Stuccio, the Festival’s Producing Director, about half of these artists are based in Philadelphia, while others come in from across the globe. In 2010, 15 Live Arts Festival shows will be presented.

The mission of the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival is to commission, develop, and present a wide range of the latest cutting-edge, high-quality performance.

Through this, we seek to:

• Present audiences with high-quality work that entertains, challenges, and stimulates.

• Support Philadelphia-based, regional, national, and international artists who create this work.

• Showcase Philadelphia-based artists alongside their international peers.

• Provide workshops for diverse audiences and aspiring local artists to encourage the growth and continued health of the local and regional performing arts community.

• Create a festival that engages fully in the global dialogue about contemporary performance and that solidifies Philadelphia as a performing arts destination.

Philly Fringe

Philly Fringe is an unfiltered festival, where new and established artists present their work free of a selection process. For some it’s a once-a-year, or once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a show; for professional companies, it can be an opportunity to try something new and join in the fray. It’s come one, come all! In 2009, 185 Philly Fringe shows were self-produced by artists from throughout the region. How many artists will participate in 2010 will be known in May!

The mission of the Philly Fringe is to provide an opportunity and a platform for Philadelphia-based artists to produce their work.

Through this we seek to:

• Create a cityscape filled with theater, dance, music, and everything in between for audiences to enjoy.

• Encourage artists to give expression to and develop their talents and artistic visions in total artistic freedom without any curatorial barriers in bringing that work to an audience.

• Help artists become successful independent producers.

• Ensure the growth and continued health of the local and regional performing arts community.

Twelve DC Yoga Studios Offer 30 Days of Deals

Washington D.C. – June 15, 2010 — Citizen Effect’s 30-Day Yoga Challenge is bringing together DC’s top yoga studios and their students for a great cause: building a foster home for orphaned and abandoned children in Cloetesville, South Africa.

The Challenge calls for participants to do as much yoga as they can for charity during July. Much like a marathon runner, participants will pledge a fundraising goal, ask friends and family to sponsor them, and collect donations through www.CitizenEffect.org.

The Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP) is doubling the impact of Citizen Effect’s 30-Day Yoga Challenge by matching the total amount of money raised.

Twelve district studios including Flow, Tranquil Space, Studio Serenity, STROGA, Lil Omm, Yoga Chai, Quiet Mind and Circle Yoga are sponsoring the Challenge by offering free or deeply discounted classes to participants.

Additionally, the top fundraising yogis will receive apparel from sponsor lululemon athletica Georgetown.

The event is the brainchild of Carolyn Butcher and Kelly Ferraro of WelcomeOmDC.com — “DC yoga studios are synonymous with giving back, their giving nature made the DC yoga community a natural partner for Citizen Effect’s 30-Day yoga challenge.” Ferraro adds, “Ours will truly be the “om” heard round the world.”

The 30-Day Yoga Challenge kicks off June 30th with a free outdoor class in Meridian Hill Park at 7:30 p.m. A celebratory party will be held at lululemon Georgetown on August 5th. For more information and to sign-up, visit www.citizeneffect.org/yogachallenge.

You know there is no magic way to shed pounds or become fit. The only way to get there is through hard work and eating right. Yet you can give yourself a leg up in the process by changing how you think about food, weight loss and eating healthy. By changing how you think, you’ll also change how you act and hopefully impact your health for the better. Meditation can play a key role in helping you overcome food issues and create the body you want to have now. Awareness, consciousness, focus and concentration developed through yoga practice and meditation will help you to embody these key points. Here are 50 tips to help you learn some tricks to get your mind ripe and ready for weight loss.

General

These general tips will help you learn to adapt your thoughts to healthy weight loss.

1. Be patient. Losing weight in any kind of healthy way is going to take time. Give yourself a break and relax, and the weight will come off.

2. Don’t stress. Stressing about weight loss will likely only make it harder to lose.

3. Be realistic Setting unrealistic goals for your weight loss isn’t healthy for your body or mind. Get your mind set on more realistic accomplishments and you’ll be happier and healthier.

4. Create a routine. Success with any weight loss program requires creating a routine and sticking to it in what you eat, when you work out and how you think about your progress.

5. Listen to your body. It will tell you when you aren’t eating enough, you’re eating too much, or you’re pushing yourself too hard.

6. Use your imagination. Our imaginations are powerful things and you can use yours to picture your body and your life the way you really want it to be.

7. Take it slow. You cannot expect to change your mindset or your body overnight. Take the process slow and steady for the best results.

8. Be honest with yourself. Being honest might be more difficult or more painful, but you cannot move forward in changing your body or how you think about it without facing some hard truths about yourself.

9. Find out what you truly want. The reality is that you might not be ready to lose weight or commit yourself to the work that it takes. Find out what you truly want in your life. Knowing that you really, really want to lose weight can be a huge factor in motivating you.

Mindset

Learn how to change your mindset with these tips.

10. Always be accountable. There is no one else who is responsible for you losing weight. You have to be accountable for what you eat and how often you work out.

11. Break the cycle of excuses. We all make excuses to try to justify our behavior, but these kinds of excuses aren’t doing you any favors when it comes to weight loss. Force yourself to accept your failures and work to improve them.

12. Deal with your emotions. For many people, food is an emotional thing and a coping mechanism for other things that aren’t right in their lives. If you want to change your mindset about your body, you’ll first have to deal with these powerful emotions.

13. Make the decision to be thinner. Sometimes all it takes is a firm resolution to make a change in your life. If you want to lose weight, make the choice to do so and let your actions follow suit.

14. Take responsibility. No one is forcing food down your throat or keeping you from the gym. Once you realize that and can take responsibility for your own actions regarding your health and fitness, you’ll be one step closer to meeting your goals.

15. Think clearly. Weight loss, body image and personal health can be emotionally charged issues. When you think about these things it it important to separate them as best you can from your emotions and make logical, thoughtful decisions about what is best. For instance, our emotions might tell us we need a piece of cake after a hard day, but our logical thinking would tell us it will only make you feel worse about yourself.

16. Change your programming. Many of us have programmed our brains to think we are fat, unhealthy and will never look or feel like we want to. Thinking this way is often a self-fulfilling prophecy, but by changing your mental programming, you’ll change what you’re capable of in weight loss.

17. Stay positive. There is no upside to negative thinking when it comes to losing weight. Staying positive will help you feel better about yourself, keep you motivated and reduce stress — all of which will help you lose more weight.

18. Train your mind to think in your best interest. If you want to lose weight, focus on replacing your unhealthy thoughts with healthy ones. After a while, you will think less unhealthy thoughts and be a step ahead in reaching your goals.

Motivation

Give your mind some motivation with these ideas.

19. Pick out a motivational photograph. Whether you want to look more like you did 20 years ago or have the physique of someone else you admire, choose a photograph you can look at when you’re struggling to help keep yourself motivated.

20. Set smaller daily goals. While your larger goals are important, focusing on smaller, individual goals will give you more of a sense of accomplishment and change your mindset on a daily basis.

21. Use support from friends. There are few things that can change how you feel about yourself and your progress like motivation from friends around you.

22. Reward yourself. When you’ve worked really hard for something it’s only fair to reward yourself. Give yourself an indulgence, though not a food-related one, that you’ve really been wanting.

23. Tell yourself you can do it. Change your mindset about weight loss by constantly reminding yourself that no matter how hard it is that you can and will do it.

24. Never stop thinking about your goals. Keeping your goals in mind throughout the day will help motivate you and keep you on the right track.

25. Surround yourself with good role models. You won’t do yourself any favors when you’re trying to lose weight if you surround yourself with people who practice bad habits and influence you to do so as well. Spend time with friends who motivate you to be healthy instead.

26. Have a mantra. Finding your own personal weight loss mantra can be a great way to help keep yourself positive and focused on your goals.

27. Look at the bright side. Setbacks don’t have to ruin your motivation for weight loss. Instead, think of them as a chance to work harder and prove your commitment to your goals.

28. Create a map to your health and happiness. Spending some time laying out your goals, collecting photos that motivate you, and planning out your steps along the way can help make process easier, more real and something you’re more motivated to do every day.

Food

Change your relationship with food by changing your thoughts using this advice.

29. Think yourself out of bad habits. Bad habits with food don’t have to take down your weight loss goals. Instead, use the power of your mind to fight these bad habits. It will take some doing but you can overcome them.

30. Look at food differently. Food isn’t your enemy or your friend — it’s neutral. Learn to look at food as a source of nourishment rather than a reward or a way to deal with emotions.

31. Picture what food is doing for your body. When you look at what you’re eating, picture what that food can do for your body and how the nutrients will help you feel.

32. Allow yourself to eat when you’re hungry. Losing weight should never mean starving yourself. Listen to your body and feed yourself when your body tells you it’s hungry. Just make sure it’s actually hunger and not boredom or thirst you’re giving into. Likewise, stop eating when you are full.

33. Eat foods you crave. You can have foods you crave while you’re trying to lose weight if you can do so in moderation. Keeping things totally off limits could cause you to binge.

34. Be conscious. Always be aware of what you’re eating. Eating mindlessly while watching TV can lead to a lot of unwanted and unneeded calories.

Self-Image

How you see yourself can make a big impact in how much weight you lose. Try these solutions to feel good about yourself no matter how much you weigh.

35. Change how you think about your body. If you think you are a fat person, you’ll likely stay that way. Train your mind to see yourself as attractive at any weight and you’ll see more weight loss progress.

36. Get control over your thoughts. When your thoughts are out of control it’s easy to think cruel things about yourself and put yourself down. When you start to feel your thoughts heading in that direction, take the wheel and steer them somewhere positive.

37. Stop looking at the numbers. Weight isn’t everything when it comes to health. Some people look super skinny and feel healthy at one weight while another person might be totally different. We all have our own comfort zone, so listen to your body, not the scale.

38. Focus on how you feel. You might not have met your goal weight yet, but focusing on changes in how you feel can help keep you motivated and feeling good about yourself.

39. Stop berating yourself. Negative thoughts aren’t going to help you lose weight. If you have a misstep or aren’t progressing as fast as you’d like, never berate yourself. Simply get up the next day and start again from a positive standpoint.

40. Fill yourself with love. If you want to get the most out of your weight loss journey, make part of the process learning to truly love yourself. No one is perfect so get a handle on accepting and appreciating your faults.

41. Take pride in your appearance. It doesn’t matter how much you weigh, you can look good and feel good about yourself. Shower, put on a fragrance, style your hair, and wear your favorite clothes. It will change how you see yourself and how others see you as well.

Meditation

Learn how to turn your meditation practice into a reflection on your personal weight loss goals with these tips.

42. Imagine yourself eating like you should be. The more you imagine it, the more likely it will become reality.

43. Picture yourself thin. If you believe that you can and will be thin, then you give yourself the motivation and drive to actually make it happen.

44. Think about activities you’ll do when you’re thin. If you’re too overweight to do things you love right now, picture yourself doing those things as the new, thinner you.

45. Relax. You can’t take control over your thoughts and your mind if you’re stressed out and distracted. Simply relax and let go the problems of the day.

46. Picture yourself wearing something you’ve always wanted to wear. A big reason many people want to lose weight is to fit into the clothes and style that they love and admire. Get a mental picture of how you’ll look sporting something you’ve always wanted to wear to give you some motivation.

47. Imagine that you love to exercise. Rely on the power of imagination to help give yourself the initiative you need to get fit and in shape.

48. Don’t let negative thoughts interfere. It’s easy to think negative thoughts about yourself when you’re tackling a big and difficult obstacle like losing weight, but you have to make sure to keep these kinds of thoughts out during your meditation. Replace them with happy, supportive ones instead.

49. Kick all unhealthy habits and foods out of visualization. Don’t let your mental fantasies include unhealthy foods and behaviors. You might really crave them but the purpose is to retrain your mind to let them go.

50. Breathe deeply and calm yourself. Once you’re calm, relaxed, and in control of your mind and body, you’ll be able to start thinking clearly about who and where you want to be.

Rittenhouse Square Flower Market for Children’s Charities is an annual event held in the Rittenhouse Park, Philadelphia , for 96 years. I took time to stop and talk to people this year; so, now I understand what a fabulous and admirable concept the flower market in Rittenhouse Park really is. It is a contribution to our communities. If you are a Center City Philadelphian chances are you know the park well.

Rittenhouse Park was one of the five established park spaces that William Penn planned for Philadelphia in the 17th Century. Originally it was called Southwest Square and then it was named after a descendant of a paper-makers’ family, David Rittenhouse. He was an fried in the American Revolution, an astronomer and clock maker. In 1975 the Friends of Rittenhouse have looked after the conservation, beautification and development of the park. It is one of those fabulous, warm, eccentric popular parks that has visitors from all walks of life there.

The park hosts the Flower Market Charity event to showcase up to four deserving local children’s charities. These children’s organizations are highlighted because of their excellence in the field. Helping children to have better foundation, education, care, discipline, assistance and much more. The children from the schools actually make items to be sold at the event. There were beautiful cards, drawings, painted potters, gingerbread men cookies all made by the children. There were potted flowers galore, plants and herbs. The local SPCA was out there with some adorable pets to be adopted. People to educate and talk to you about the schools, foundation and park association. There were plenty of food, drinks, animals, balloons and fun to be had by all.

It was a perfect place to buy mom a present and one that comes from the heart and helps children at the same time. I left the park touched to have taken the time to understand and experience the wonderful meaning of this event. Try and remember to stop by next year. I think they adjusted the date to proceed mother’s day so it is convenient for us to support the cause.

This week a friend shared an opportunity with me to meet Djuna Wojton, a past life regressionist, astrologer, writer, reiki master, healer, belly dancer and much more. Djuna gathered people together for a Karmic Healing: Exploring Past Lives Workshop. I am always open to trying new modalities that develop and work with the mind, body and spirit. I feel like all the “work” reinforces other learning’s and you never know what “work” might have profound or an immense effect on you.

Most people admit to having a curiosity as to what past life regression is and what exactly that meant. This is an area I never really explored before; so, I signed up for the workshop. We were told to bring a notebook, mat or blanket, and a pillow.

There were nine people there: some had been working with Djuna for a time and others that had not met her. We all sat in a circle and Djuna explained about how past life regression worked in theory. She explained that we have a soul body and an ego body. The soul body is eternal and the ego body “we choose” each time we reincarnate.

Djuna explains that our astrological chart is like a roadmap and shows how our celestial makeup is the source of why we embody many different characteristics. She reminds us that our astrological chart is directly affected by the planetary rotation. This movement triggers karmic seeds, which are the nature of our make up. These seeds serve as signals that begin to play out as dramas that stem from unresolved past lives. How interesting! Djuna uses the world as an example of how karmic seeds are creating a huge state of crisis and that this is really an opportunity for growth.

She begins to describe the process and what we will expect. Her manner is very calm, pleasant and peaceful. She has been working in this realm for 30 years and has helped many people move through some of their karmic issues to live more harmoniously in their lives, to heal, and accomplish more.

We open up our mats, lay on our pillows, get in a comfortable position and she begins to guide us into relaxation. From relaxation she takes us into our past by “getting on a train”. When we get out of the train we begin to connect to our past life. We are asked by Djuna to recall in our own minds: who, what, where, when, how things had happened. Wedecipher a spiritual lesson and review our death. Slowly, we” get back on the train” and return to our current life.Awakening, peaceful and relaxed. I was feeling the light and energy that was created together and separately.

We shared our experiences as a group. Some people had clear visions, some flashes, some unsure of what was happening and it was hard to trust these visions. Personally, I did not feel ready to get off the train and begin my work nor did I feel like I had a clear connection to the signals that would let me know what my past life had been like. I felt a bit like I was grasping for straws as I shared my experience. My friend said she felt a similar feeling. I guess when you are going back in time; to a place, a life you have never been before it can feel a bit disjointed and unfamiliar.

Reflecting on the experience I realize it has opened a part of me I want to learn more about and continue my work with Djuna. I can see how this work could create a clearer connection and a deeper understanding of who I really am so I may embrace all parts of me and continue to thrive and grow as fully as possible in this lifetime.

If you would like to work with Djuna one on one, go to a workshop or buy her book, Clearing Past-Life Blocks to Present-Day Love, Health and Happiness. Please find her here: http://www.djunaverse.com

As part of a showcase to share their many talents with Philadelphia the Human Landscape Dance will premiere two pieces this coming weekend, “January Night” and “Closet Dances.”

Human Landscape Dance use structure and the environment to work within to develop the characters and reveal the attributes of their selves in a dance that moves and enraptures you. The physical elements involved in their performance keep you suspended and anxious for more to come. They use the contemporary dance as a spiritual and artistic endeavor as you are sure to feel their souls express and communicate with you on many levels in a compelling way that leaves you inspired and satisfied.

Each time they create a new piece they find inspiration in the environments we embody and the many parallels and contrasts we humans have as we grow and develop as part of the Human Landscape that exists as a relationship to mother nature. They use contemporary dance to create a lush expression of what it means to exist in this place and time.

Malcolm (Mac) Shute is a dance artist. His performing career began in Washington DC with Nancy Havlik’s Dance Performance Group and Jane Franklin Dance. In 2006, he completed his Master of Fine Arts in Dance with a concentration in choreography from the University of Maryland. He went on to found Human Landscape Dance to showcase his own artistic vision. Shute is fascinated by relationships between people and the environments we inhabit. The performers of Human Landscape Dance appear on a variety of alternative spaces, lawns, stairwells, and walls, as well as the stage. Shute extends his understanding of movement craft by teaching. He is an adjunct professor in the Towson University BFA Dance Program.

We walk on the Earth every day sometimes not realizing our feet are touching the ground. Yet, without Mother Nature giving us the Earth we would have nothing to stand on. :)
Maybe we could spend a little more time appreciating the Earth and helping her to sustain our eco-structure. Continue reading →

Earth day has been going on for forty years and we know the Earth has been here much longer. There are SO MANY FRIGHTENING REALITIES RESONATING FROM OUR EARTH WE SHOULD TAKE NOTE OF BEFORE OUR EYES! It’s not a soapbox here but I do feel strongly about our behavior. We watch the Earth suffer devastations that affect our people, homes, businesses, quality of life, environment, energy and every last thing. Do we have the power to join together and make a positive effect on the Earth?

Unfortunately, it is quite a daunting task and I am not sure if we can reverse the winds of change and to redirect them to a positive flow. It would take more momentum than most people are putting out at this current time. It’s like solar wind power on top everyone’s house not just some fields here and there. We need sustainable living in every direction and conscious use, conservation and replenishment of our resources.

I do not wish to sound grave; but in my heart it feels like a losing battle. More people need to take more responsibility and action. Currently, I am doing a decent amount of conservation, educating and participation in activities and events that could lead to more change id more people followed suit in a similar fashion. I believe I can do more. I vow to make more attempts to support the Earth and its health in the coming year(s) and will give an update at year-end. I am making myself more accountable right now.

It is a worthwhile cause & we all know we can and should join in for this monumental movement to Help the Earth. Of course, our footprint(s) might have already been too large and eventually the Earth may reclaim itself, as nature is King. The Earth will eventually rejuvinate and revive itself by starting new again. Until then, we can ignore it or take action. I like to Live in Action!

So, in support of the Earth I joined in for the second time at Uhuru’s Earth Day, Clark Park celebration of Earth and Freedom. These are things I want to be sustained forever. It was awesome to see the event grow from the previous year. There were more vendors, more types of people to join in the celebration.

The Uhuru does a great job of bringing education in many areas to the forefront; they did not fail to bring a variety of entertainment to us. The weather was cool and breezy. The feeling of the Earth under my feet, the breeze on my skin and the good vibrations of people, art, culture and food was a sensory delight!

Remember Earth Day every day and not just once a year.
