YOU HAVE TO BE QUICKER THAN YOUR OWN MIND by Selim Aissel

When you see yourself analysing or negatively judging what you observe in yourself, whether it’s a thought, emotion, or attitude, be more clever than the one who is judging or analysing. Step back into the observer; observe the judge and don’t judge him. The judge becomes the object of your observation. Remember to make every disturbing element the object of your observation; in this way, the observer goes more deeply into observation each time, whereas if you see what comes as an obstacle to observation, it becomes one.

What is more, this is easy; it’s always the same mechanism that is observed, but compared to it, there is the grandeur of the observer that each time steps backward. Nothing can touch it. Observe, for example, the “I’m a wretched observer”; otherwise you’re taken in by the tricks of the mind that foil you every time. Each time, observe what is trying to trick you, with the knowledge that each time you observe, it is going to try to trick you. You have to be quicker than your own mind. It’s a tough game, and for a long time you’re going to lose.

It’s like a game of chess: when you move the first piece, a real chess master already knows exactly how he is going to beat you. Afterward he has to wait longer, and the number of possible combinations decreases. Your mind is a master; he’s going to beat you every time, for a long time. Unless you observe how he beats you, and one day you’ll know his ten thousand ways of beating you. Then there is you and him, and you can use your mind because you know everything he does. With one advantage for you: you are more than he is, you have a soul, a spirit, while he is just a mind.

Your mind is like a chess master; you’ve got to learn his game, and you can only learn it because he puts you in check. Each thought that comes is a new trick of the mind that is trying to carry you elsewhere; but one day the observer is as strong as the mind, both of them watch the game, and you can use your mind, you know what he is going to do, you’ve become quicker than him. Then you’re the one who decides.

The more you are in the observer, the less importance the object you observe has. When you are in the state of the observer, which is not the state of the dreamer, you observe what you decide to observe and are awake to the rest; otherwise this state of concentration leads to emptiness, but to a hollow emptiness. True emptiness is the emptiness of the observer who is detached from the mechanism and capable of taking in everything. Thoughts come and go in your emptiness, and it remains empty because nothing remains attached to it. The observer sees everything, it remains tranquil, there are no negative emotions. Everything is handled rightly. Things pass, the observer can take them seriously or lightly, it is identified with nothing. Judgment belongs to the world of things that pass.

True silence is what can welcome any sound. Immobility is what can welcome any movement, and the movement is always just. Observe by stepping back further and further, or like in Charlie Chaplin’s films, by each time climbing up one more story. In the assembly line down below, there’s bustle and commotion. On the story above, men are drawing the plans. One more story above, the big boss, the one who says what’s going to be done with the plans, is leaning back on a comfortable couch, leisurely smoking a big cigar and watching all this commotion on a television screen.

The work of observation I propose allows you to climb up a story each time. The commotion is going on, but as for you, you watch it. Sometimes the mechanism is already too strongly in motion and you’re not able to enter into the Work; but sometimes you’re quicker than it is. Then a space of freedom opens for you; you know what’s going to happen next, so no need to play it all over again.

Everyone loves the quote “laughter is the best medicine,” so we want to encourage you smile on the inside which leads to smiling on the outside. The body follows the mind and if you know how beneficial smiling is to your overall health and well being I can’t imagine how you can deny letting everyone see your pearly whites. Try it, smiling can boost your mood and even your immune system. Keep reading for more fascinating facts about our smiles.

1. Forcing yourself to smile can boost your mood: Psychologists have found that even if you’re in bad mood, you can instantly lift your spirits by forcing yourself to smile.

2. It boosts your immune system: Smiling really can improve your physical health, too. Your body is more relaxed when you smile, which contributes to good health and a stronger immune system.

3. Smiles are contagious: It’s not just a saying: smiling really is contagious, scientists say. In a study conducted in Sweden, people had difficulty frowning when they looked at other subjects who were smiling, and their muscles twitched into smiles all on their own.

4. Smiles Relieve Stress: Your body immediately releases endorphins when you smile, even when you force it. This sudden change in mood will help you feel better and release stress.

5. It’s easier to smile than to frown: Scientists have discovered that your body has to work harder and use more muscles to frown than it does to smile.

6. It’s a universal sign of happiness: While hand shakes, hugs, and bows all have varying meanings across cultures, smiling is known around the world and in all cultures as a sign of happiness and acceptance.

7. We still smile at work: While we smile less at work than we do at home, 30% of subjects in a research study smiled five to 20 times a day, and 28% smiled over 20 times per day at the office.

8. Smiles use from 5 to 53 facial muscles: Just smiling can require your body to use up to 53 muscles, but some smiles only use 5 muscle movements.

9. Babies are born with the ability to smile: Babies learn a lot of behaviors and sounds from watching the people around them, but scientists believe that all babies are born with the ability, since even blind babies smile.

10. Smiling helps you get promoted: Smiles make a person seem more attractive, sociable and confident, and people who smile more are more likely to get a promotion.

11. Smiles are the most easily recognizable facial expression: People can recognize smiles from up to 300 feet away, making it the most easily recognizable facial expression.

12. Women smile more than men: Generally, women smile more than men, but when they participate in similar work or social roles, they smile the same amount. This finding leads scientists to believe that gender roles are quite flexible. Boy babies, though, do smile less than girl babies, who also make more eye contact.

13. Smiles are more attractive than makeup: A research study conducted by Orbit Complete discovered that 69% of people find women more attractive when they smile than when they are wearing makeup.

14. There are 19 different types of smiles: UC-San Francisco researcher identified 19 types of smiles and put them into two categories: polite “social” smiles which engage fewer muscles, and sincere “felt” smiles that use more muscles on both sides of the face.

15. Babies start smiling as newborns: Most doctors believe that real smiles occur when babies are awake at the age of four-to-six weeks, but babies start smiling in their sleep as soon as they’re born.

This week a friend shared an opportunity with me to meet Djuna Wojton, a past life regressionist, astrologer, writer, reiki master, healer, belly dancer and much more. Djuna gathered people together for a Karmic Healing: Exploring Past Lives Workshop. I am always open to trying new modalities that develop and work with the mind, body and spirit. I feel like all the “work” reinforces other learning’s and you never know what “work” might have profound or an immense effect on you.

Most people admit to having a curiosity as to what past life regression is and what exactly that meant. This is an area I never really explored before; so, I signed up for the workshop. We were told to bring a notebook, mat or blanket, and a pillow.

There were nine people there: some had been working with Djuna for a time and others that had not met her. We all sat in a circle and Djuna explained about how past life regression worked in theory. She explained that we have a soul body and an ego body. The soul body is eternal and the ego body “we choose” each time we reincarnate.

Djuna explains that our astrological chart is like a roadmap and shows how our celestial makeup is the source of why we embody many different characteristics. She reminds us that our astrological chart is directly affected by the planetary rotation. This movement triggers karmic seeds, which are the nature of our make up. These seeds serve as signals that begin to play out as dramas that stem from unresolved past lives. How interesting! Djuna uses the world as an example of how karmic seeds are creating a huge state of crisis and that this is really an opportunity for growth.

She begins to describe the process and what we will expect. Her manner is very calm, pleasant and peaceful. She has been working in this realm for 30 years and has helped many people move through some of their karmic issues to live more harmoniously in their lives, to heal, and accomplish more.

We open up our mats, lay on our pillows, get in a comfortable position and she begins to guide us into relaxation. From relaxation she takes us into our past by “getting on a train”. When we get out of the train we begin to connect to our past life. We are asked by Djuna to recall in our own minds: who, what, where, when, how things had happened. Wedecipher a spiritual lesson and review our death. Slowly, we” get back on the train” and return to our current life.Awakening, peaceful and relaxed. I was feeling the light and energy that was created together and separately.

We shared our experiences as a group. Some people had clear visions, some flashes, some unsure of what was happening and it was hard to trust these visions. Personally, I did not feel ready to get off the train and begin my work nor did I feel like I had a clear connection to the signals that would let me know what my past life had been like. I felt a bit like I was grasping for straws as I shared my experience. My friend said she felt a similar feeling. I guess when you are going back in time; to a place, a life you have never been before it can feel a bit disjointed and unfamiliar.

Reflecting on the experience I realize it has opened a part of me I want to learn more about and continue my work with Djuna. I can see how this work could create a clearer connection and a deeper understanding of who I really am so I may embrace all parts of me and continue to thrive and grow as fully as possible in this lifetime.

Surrender or let go of daily tension, toxicity and stress by finding a quiet place and asking yourself to relax, deep breath and release anything and everything you hold.

Surrendering in a yoga posture. What does that mean? To me, it is to be in a posture and let go. As I teach yoga, I look around and find so many people still holding so much tension in their bodies. When I go inward I can find places within my self I need to surrender from in order to be open or relaxed in a posture.

It is possible to release and open each part of your body from head to toe. If we were able to get rid of the tension and stress that is built up on a daily basis, how much less tension would be in our bodies?

Whether it is in a contracted yoga posture or a true relaxation posture, little by little, just like a hip opener, you can draw deeper into surrender if you keep practicing it. This is the only way to truly train physical relaxation in yoga. There is a certain type of magical feeling when you get to this point. Like nirvana must be, full body relaxation is splendid and so rejuvenating! This is the point of surrendering so completely that you let go of the physical body and just reside in your spiritual self.

By practicing surrender in different challenging or relaxation postures will get you lots of different kinds of releases. Some of them are mental, some emotional, and there are spiritual releases as well. Surrendering and breathing into a relaxation posture will restore your body significantly if incorporated into a regular practice. Personally, as I have continued with this practice, I can feel my bodies’ ability to rebuild as I open, breathe and relax. Emotionally, mentally it can help people not feel like you have to control everything. Start telling your mind and body to take a break. Find peace, happiness and emptiness.

Give yourself a gift of surrender and release from the normal pressure, tension and activity that we live our lives in on a regular basis. Taking these moments to surrender you will become enveloped by a state of grace. In that place of openness you can experience the merging of your self with the Universal energy to become one. Allowing yourself to trust the Universal law that guides us through life. This will help you release the suffering of your own will and ego and allow the Universal energy to direct your soul. Or at least your body will be a bit more relaxed.

ON THE MAT EXERCISE

Ideally you start this practice in a meditative state so that the work is very deep. Start in corpse pose. Lie on the ground, chin down, hips open, arms open. Try releasing the spine deeper into the Earth. In all directions you expand and release against and into the Earth. Fill your body with breath and send relaxation into the posture.

Breathe in and out deeply to the surrender of your physical, mental, spiritual self. The act of letting go is so freeing. It allows the body to just be and not be in control. From this place your mind will clear and what is your core will be emitted from your center. Take the focus off yourself and become ONE with the Universe for a while.

Each time you do this practice in a posture the body lets go and releases a little deeper. The process is about letting go so much you find what is in your true center. Only you know if you are concentrating and focused in the specific place of your body so that you will be able to release it. Concentration is a definite component of getting to the state of “surrender.” Whether it is tension, negativity, toxicity, emotional, physical, spiritual stress- just let go of it.

OFF THE MAT EXERCISE

Challenge yourself to find one time every day you are holding tension in your body or mind, release it and take 9 deep breaths in and out of that space and think open, relax and surrender.

Try to visualize or call the attention of your mind to a body part. Release that area by releasing the stress, tension or blockages. Use your mind’s eye to scan your body parts and open and release the places where you are holding on. Let the breath guide you a little deeper each time.

Or once a day take time to let your shoulders relax, let your jaw open, relax your hands and feet. Then move into your mind and surrender anything you hold in it just for a few moments by using the breath as relaxation. This is a useful tool for every day life.

Living with an Open Heart requires constant attention in a modern world of chaos and result-orientated behavior. Cultivating the ability to express love on a continuim can be challenging. A truly open heart center that creates experiences and relationships is a beautiful gift and sight to behold. I offer a thought for St. Valentine: to live in the realm of Open Heart and Universal Love and Consciousness and further away from an individualistic self. Continue reading →

There have been historic amounts of snow falling in Philadelphia and the Northeast; so, it is easy to find yourself being cold. Yesterday, I woke up to a snowed-in morning and before I got out of bed I realized I was thinking about the ability to express love in my half-sleep/wake mode. It felt like I was thinking but I realized I was projecting what I thought to someone else as if I felt my thoughts through the other person and not myself. I was feeling as though I had “stepped out” of my being and into another persons’ being.

Either way, I was feeling different and thinking of the sad reality that most of us are prisoners of the self, or the self that is imposed by our immediate surroundings and family, our society, culture, upbringing, circumstances and predispositions. As a whole most of us do not take the time to express and live through love. It is quite possible that the world tears at you and slowly your heart can become closed.; this can be limiting yet a protective and pointed way of living a modern life. But, what about when you feel like you want to say or do something different in a situation and you are almost debilitated, incapacitated by your old behavior, by the old you? It prompted questions: How long have you been living in the old, same you? When do you feel you will be strong enough to overcome your old self and break the chains to change? When will we say enough and surrender to truly open our heart center and live from there?

This morning I turned on my heart light and I opened my heart a little wider. I don’t know how long it will stay this open. I don’t know if it will get discarded, like the snow that covers the ground as the sidewalk gets shoveled. I do know that for a full 15 minutes I felt this warm buzzing, so strong, and it was my heart resonating, vibrating L O V E. I didn’t need a particular person to claim it or cherish it. It didn’t need to be sent to anyone, I let it radiate out into the Universe as far as it could go. Funny, it really didn’t go that far and maybe that is because I needed the love myself. It is said in spiritual practice that you must first love yourself before you can love others. I truly believe that idea. Loving with an open heart yourself, your life and others is a process and exercise of letting go.

Funny, I hadn’t even think of the whole Valentine’s Day connection; but, it popped into my mind and suddenly I really savored the idea of taking time to open my heart and using these moments to pledge to myself that I will live connected to and from the heart. For me having an open heart has been a bit by bit process to embody. In the past, I was scared to express these types of emotions to others or myself. Today, I feel rewarded to get further into the realm of Open Heart and Universal Love and Consciousness and further away from a selfish me that thought the world did me wrong and closed me down. It is only I who can send out the Love I want to give and receive in living life.

Ahh, snow angels, give me wings, I am on my way..

MEDITATION FOR ANYWHERE- (3- 5 minutes) –

Try focusing on yourself or another person in your life and visualize pure love flowing from your heart into theirs or your own heart.

Deep breathing through your intention, focusing on the energy you are sending out. You could see the color green, feel the heart opening and streaming, pouring love into the heart. You can even put your hands over your heart to connect the mind and body to the spirit. When finished sit quietly and absorb the sensations you created through the practice.

This is a practice to become more heart centered/connected and one that hopefully reminds you of the beauty in Love.

Happy Valentine’s Day!!

http://www.history.com/content/valentine/history-of-valentine-s-day

People come in various types of personalities. Personality is inherent from birth but also learned from life. We all struggle with different facets of our self. The city is a quick paced, impatient stomping ground where one would have no trouble keeping alive the frustrating cycle of having little or no patience. Learning a lesson is best when you keep your sense of humor. Continue reading →

I am tickled to find the lessons in life. Often times they come at times that are inopportune. But, really when would the opportune time to dig deep, reflect, analyze and move forward with old and new knowledge in hand to proceed as a slightly better person in your life? When would it be a “good time” to block off the time to get that “work” done?

So, I was shown in real time, a real life Zen experience and I don’t know if it turned out so amusing and helpful to me because it unveiled itself in a 6-7 months or it was just time I had a positive experience learning patience.

In July, I ordered a part for a futon bed because I had a busted pipe and water flooded my basement and I chucked a bunch of “stuff” on my futon to avoid water damage. Only months later, I learned I busted the frame from the weight of the “stuff”. At this time someone was going to be staying with me in my home, and I needed the futon functioning properly because they were going to sleep on it for some time. The futon is now in good condition.

Things I learned on this Project:

• Take time to dig out paperwork that you might need in order to have the right part/thing to be requested from the beginning.

• Anything wrong that can happen, may & probably will, even when you are trying to do things “right”, if “they” want to “test” you.

• If you thought you started early on a “big or important” project, then start even earlier next time because “sh-t happens.”

• Helpful, calm people go a long way in the service industry.

• If you want to reciprocate positivity and certain traits that aren’t your best, mirror others. It’s an excellent start to learning new behaviors.

• Sleeping on the tile floor, on a futon mattress, can be down right COLD!

• Smile, Laugh, Forgive Yourself and Others cuz.. Life Just Ain’t Perfect.

Transformation is the process of change that can affect your character, nature, appearance, feelings and all aspects of your life. On Halloween Americans dress up and sometimes we move closer to the person we are and sometimes further apart. In yoga, you will always move closer to your true self. Continue reading →

I was out on Halloween night with my master/teacher and we went to a party where everybody dressed up. He chose to be a monk & I chose a daredevil or a female evil keneival. As I pondered the process of picking out a costume, getting in costume and presenting yourself to others I realized this could be easy or difficult for a person. I got to thinking about why that might be and went on to observe what I thought of the night in a new paradigm. One that made me question: who we are, what we are made of and how comfortable we are in this process. The Halloween party was a unique experience because I felt like the hundred’s of people that were there had transformed themselves into a deeper version of themselves or brought out a hidden part of themselves. Either way the party was full on and everyone was in character. It was so great to see people living life and feeling free and happy!

As I thought of the act of transformation I decided that yoga was the catalyst for my most complete and significant transformation. I’m not sure if the people around me really know how different I feel in my same skin. I don’t know if others realize that while I am the same being; I do not resonant on the same channel, in the same vibration or in the same harmony. Much like music I have changed my tune. It is a subtle thing from the outside; it is the deep internal changes that make me feel like a slightly different person; oddly, more like the little girl I remember from childhood. Shedding layers of negativity and toxicity to shine as the person I had lost somewhere along the way. It has been several years since I felt whole and calm; but, I do notice the process continuing and that each new dimension continues to be significant as I continue on my path to be One with the Universe.

In yoga transformation comes as a byproduct of practicing yoga. The positive effects of yoga are so overwhelming that most who find that connection are like spokesperson for the cause. Yoga can take an old body and make it flexible and graceful, meet a rigid mind and make it more focused, clear and take a closed spirit and soften it.

Yoga can literally burn off layers of your former self in the form of physical, mental, spiritual toxicity. It is amazing to experience the process of change for yourself and in others. We hold old memories
In our bodies, spirits and minds. Eventually if a person has enough bad or negative experience their being shifts toward darkness. Once this happens it becomes more difficult to look for or believe in the light. Eventually life can become like a self-fulfilling prophecy never quite treating you right or turning out the best. On the other hand, if the cup is half full then life can keep getting better and better.

Transformation starts with feeling things could be better or they are not right, the action is change and the goal is transformation.

Awaken your Brain is a new book on the scientific experience of awakening by Dr. Skolnick. Dr. Skolnick is an MD psychiatrist, PhD in Natural Health, with advanced training in Neuropsychology and almost 30 years as a Zen meditation practitioner.

What is awakening has been the discussion of so many conversations; the number is almost as limitless as the concept. Basically, awakening is opening your consciousness to connect to your true and higher self. This realization is one of the goals for spiritual practices, yoga or other ways to find happiness and peace in your life.

Awakening is the impetus for Totally Zen; so, it seems appropriate that Dr. Skolnick would reach out to others in the world who are actively working on sharing information about how to be healthy in our mind, body and spirit. Out of his efforts to join together to build and create wellness communities; I am honored to help him by presenting it here at Totally Zen. Awaken Your Brain is a powerful, useful and informative book.

In Awaken Your Brain, Dr. Skolnick uses a brain and wellness-based explanation and practices, to create a direct non-emotional, scientific approach to awakening your higher self. The advantage to his method it is non-emotional and rational. Meaning you can empirically see how what he is saying and teaching is valid, concrete and useful. Taking the emotions out of the process is like shaving years off the process in order to cut through the ways in which your ego has learned to interact and act with life.

I got the opportunity to speak with Dr. Skolnick I asked him how he got involved in Zen meditation. It seems he had a tragedy affect his life and Zen meditation was a path someone led him to that helped him through his rough times. As time went on he continued his journey to understand his own meditation practice which coincided with his formal studies of the brain and human behavior. His interest in psychology began early on in his life through exposure to caring for others with problems.

Through his education in graduate school he posed the question in a thesis, What Creates Awareness? The answer became the basis for the book Awaken Your Brain. He has been developing and honing his model to help you through the awakening process in a scientific based theory of Neural Inshifting. This is actually a 5 step brain skill model. The result was the creation of a full-spectrum model of how the mind and brain work -from the most primitive and abnormal states to the highest most Awakened states.

Furthering his vision he realized he needed a model to speak and teach his theory from and this book is the perfect platform. Soon he will, turn his attention into opening a wellness center, Santori West, where his model will be implemented in a teaching format that will help people transform their lives. At the center you will be able to learn how to apply this theory, keep it alive and working better in your own lives and continue to grow and change as a result of this training. As the launch of his book arrives he must be so pleased as to the results of all his hard work; I know I am really enjoying the book!

We will be watching and reporting on his progress as we are connected now and we feel his vision is golden. Learn more about the useful handbook and amazing masterpiece now and how you can use Awaken Your Brain: Coming Alive to Vibrant Well-being and a New Reality will teach you:
